Still., I am glad that at least we have the first ten episodes including the Canadian Armoured Corps battles for Normandy and later on the Hochwald Gap as Canada's contributions are far too often overlooked in other war documentaries.Ī couple of extra notes. Which is a real pity as that second season had the Israeli/Egyptian Sinai battle, the Korean War, the Tunisia and Italian campaigns and even a fascinating look at the German/Russian Baltic campaign.
More importantly, this collection ONLY consists of the first season and there is no second season which contains the remaining ten episodes. But the actual battle footage shows that all too well and the veteran's recollections are sobering enough I believe. They show the tank battles, but not the folks inside or what happens to them. Some folks have criticized it for not really showing any human beings and that is basically true. And there are a lot of small and very important interviews with the actual veterans involved in the conflict peppered throughout which I found the best part of this series as it really brings that conflict to life. Though they do throw in actual battle scenes from time to time when available. in length and using CGI graphics shows scenes that either could never be duplicated any other way or for which no actual film footage is available. Ten episodes in all on two DVD's.Įach episode runs between 41 to 43 min.
So it starts off showing one of the major clashes between the American Armored Cavalry and Iraq's elite Republican Guard in the first Gulf War, then goes on to various other important battles from the Golan Heights to El Alamein to the Battle of Normandy and ending with a two parter on the Battle of Kursk.
In this case showcasing some of the most interesting Tank Battles of the 20th century. And like these other series done surprisingly well. i.e.- told in a way that can not be done by using mostly CGI graphics.
